I'm licensed for life, accident and health insurance and registered as a mutual fund representative. Before finance, I studied molecular biology at SFU. It taught me to love evidence, explain things clearly, and never guess when I can check.

Here's what I've learned: most people don't have a money problem, they have a nobody-explained-it-to-me problem. So I start every relationship by teaching, not selling. When you understand how the pieces work, the right decisions get a lot easier.

How I got started

When my son was born, I did what every new parent does. I stared at him and thought, "I have to get this right." Then a second thought arrived, quieter and a lot less fun: I had no plan. No savings strategy, no insurance, no idea what an RESP was. I had a science degree and I couldn't explain the difference between a TFSA and an RRSP.

I went looking for answers and found the same thing everyone finds. Websites full of jargon. Friends with confident opinions and no details. And the feeling that everyone else had somehow figured this out in a class I'd missed.

So I did the only thing that made sense to me. I learned it properly, then got licensed so I could help other people skip the part where they feel lost.

That was over ten years ago. Today I sit down with families who are exactly where I was: a new baby, a first home on the horizon, a retirement that feels both far away and suddenly urgent. I don't hand them a product. I hand them the understanding I wish someone had handed me, and we go from there.

My son is the reason I started. The families I've walked this road with since are the reason I keep going.

Inflation is the quiet leak

At 3% inflation, the buying power of cash sitting still is cut in half in about 24 years. That's why "just leave it in savings" has a cost, even when the balance never drops.

Someone who starts at 25 and stops at 35 can end up with more at 65 than someone who starts at 35 and never stops. Time in the plan beats size of the plan. Ask me to show you the math.

Save first, spend what's left

Pay yourself first

Most people save whatever is left at month end, which is usually nothing. Automating even a small amount on payday flips that around. The habit matters more than the number.

Tax-free vs. tax-deferred

TFSA and RRSP aren't interchangeable

An RRSP gives you a refund now and taxes you later. A TFSA gives no refund but is never taxed again. Which one is better depends on your income today versus in retirement. Most people pick by default, not by design.

Who sells you the product matters

Know your options

A representative at a bank branch typically offers that bank's own funds and insurance. An independent representative can compare products from many different companies. Neither is automatically better, but you should know which one you're talking to.
